Rated
R (Rated R for scene of bloody violence, some strong sexual content/nudity, and language)
Directed by David Fincher
Starring Tyler Perry, Neil Patrick Harris, Ben Affleck
Featuring a talk by Professor Rick Warner, UNC Film Studies.
When the seemingly perfect Amy Dunne (Rosamund Pike) goes missing and signs point to murder, the world watches as her husband, Nick (Ben Affleck), becomes the main suspect. Adapted from the bestselling novel by Gillian Flynn, who also wrote the film’s screenplay, Gone Girl unfolds as a Hitchcockian blend of thriller, melodrama, and horror elements, with notes of irony and self-consciousness that are the hallmarks not only of Flynn’s fiction but David Fincher’s filmmaking. Exquisitely paced and edited, this film puts on bold display Fincher’s impeccable craft, which is smartly complemented by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross’s ambient electronic score. At once a kind of parody of small-town gossipy intrigue and a harrowing portrait of a couple pushed to the breaking point in the wake of the 2008 economic downturn, Gone Girl pulls us in several different directions emotionally. Moreover, it features remarkable performances in every role, not least the supporting parts played by Tyler Perry (yes, that Tyler Perry) and Kim Dickens. A must-see on the big screen!
