A Remembrance: David Lynch, 1946 - 2025
O God, I could be bounded in a nutshell, and count myself a king of infinite space…
…were it not that I have bad dreams.
Hamlet, Act II, scene ii
A dream itself is but a shadow? Not in the hands of David Lynch. A dream is no fleeting thing to be cast aside, ignored, forgotten, nor kept within oneself. If dreams were ever shadows, David Lynch brought them to light in his art.
Once saying, “We only dream of images we already have inside of us,”, he fashioned himself into a great artistic excavator of the subconscious and the deeper truths that lie therein. In fragments, blurs, and abyssal layers he paved a lost highway through the dreamscapes of his own psyche. He left that highway to us in celluloid and video tape, painted with images that reach and search beyond the pale of his subjective experience into a well of our collective unconscious. In doing so he led by example, teaching us to plumb the depths of those places in our hearts and minds where our courage may falter.
He taught us not to look away.
We are privileged to be left with the dreams he put to film and video, where the rubber meets the road. Where reality, dreams, and art coalesce. Join us as we celebrate this iconic, truly independent, American artist. One whose adept visions and deft hand changed the cinematic landscape forever.
As for what dreams may come, we hope for David’s sake that there are pieces of pie, cigarettes, and damn fine cups of coffee at every diner along that lost highway.
